As I sit down to write this, I get a little choked up. It is a lot more difficult to do than I expected! How do you sum up someone’s life of 72 years when you have only been part of that life for the last 11 years?
On Saturday, April 16th, 2022, our friend and colleague, Tim Darcey passed away. While on vacation with “his beautiful Bride”, as he always called Kathy, his wife, Tim died suddenly from unknown causes. We are only comforted by the fact that his wife and friends were by his side.
I’m told that Tim was a natural-born leader his entire life. He graduated from Oroville Union High School in 1968. He excelled in sports and earned the Eagle Scout designation honors in the Boy Scouts of America…something that takes commitment and perseverance. Between 1968 – 1972, he attended California State University at Sacramento and again excelled by graduating in the top 10% of his class with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. He showed his leadership abilities there as he led his Fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon, as their President. It was here attending college that he met his lifelong friend in 1970, Mike McGee.
Shortly after college, Tim joined his friend, Mike, in the mortgage industry. Mike started a company that was named Winchester McGee. It was in 2011, that Mike and Tim closed that company and joined Big Valley Mortgage and I had the pleasure of meeting and working with Tim.
Over the last 11 years, Tim was pretty famous for a couple of things…First, he knew everything about construction loans and was our resident expert! While he could obviously provide help to his friends on any of our products, he had the most fun being involved in construction projects. When someone else had a question, he always was willing to help! Second, every Friday, he provided the Friday afternoon Dad Joke to the entire company! Most were pretty corny, but everyone looked forward to him posting it up!
Tim’s great loves were his wife Kathy…his kids Chris, Matt, and Emily…and his new Grandson. He was honored to be involved with the Boy Scouts after earning his Eagle Scout and served as Assistant Scoutmaster, Eagle Scout Advisor, and Merit Badge Counselor from 1992 to his death. Both his sons also earned their Eagle Scout designation. He was active in all kinds of sports and hobbies and even competed nationally on a Men’s Sr. Softball Team.
I knew him as humble….gracious…full of life and sass…a conscientious and hard-working advocate for his customers…and someone who always lit up a room when he entered.
Just the Friday afternoon before his death, he and I emailed back and forth about his vacation trip…a loan that he was working on…AND about his holiday funny video, he always sends out. I wish that I would have ended that email string with a quick note of love or an XO…What I will say is that we are better for having met him, better for knowing him, and better for having loved him. If I could, I would tell him “May you be blessed in the next life, my friend, as I was in this one by knowing you”.
